Topic of the design task was to choose and analyse one of the villages in Poland, considering its urban structure and local spatial development plan. For the whole semester I have visited the village regularly to spot its problems and to look for solutions. One of the first steps I undertook was to make a mental map of the town using Kevin Lynch method. I made the analysis considering main Lynchian Elements: paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Finally I came up with my own spatial development plan for the region, including a beltway of historic center with a unique church, a XIX century manor house and a grange. Besides that, I proposed a green corridor for wild animals and separation of the building zones from orchards and fields to prevent urban sprawl.
Next I searched for the architectural archetype of the house in the village. Its proportions, shape and characteristic materials. I used the knowledge to reinterpret the exemplary form into a modern development.
The educational farm, I have designed, is located on the north border of the village. It complements the urban composition, becoming a viewing point and symbolic gate to the town. Horizontal brick buildings at the front correspond with the architectural archetype of the village. With its cosy and familiar shape, it was adapted as a „living zone” with farmer house and agroturism function. Perpendicular wooden form is meant to be an educational center with a viewing terrace.
